    The Clinical Challenge: Protecting Major Organ Health

    Stroke is well established as one of the most costly and devastating adverse events of cardiovascular surgery. i Up to 8 percent of all open heart surgeries end in stroke and as high as 75 percent end in some degree of cognitive decline. i,ii As patient populations age, this challenge will grow. ii

    A powerful tool to monitor critical organ health, regional oximetry uses near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure the balance of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2 and Hb) in the cerebral cortex, allowing the clinical team the opportunity to intervene early to prevent ischemia.
